Supreme Skids right at home : Dunfermline Press article

Dunfermline Press article by Gary Fitzpatrick
full article here

A SUPERB performance from the Skids set the seal on the week of events celebrating the career of Richard Jobson.

Saturday night's gig was a memorable occasion for the sell-out crowd savouring the reunion of one Dunfermline's best-ever bands in the fabulous setting of the rejuvenated Alhambra Theatre.

And it was a rejuvenated, storming set from the band as they turned the clock back, roared on by the hometown support like a swaying mass of football fans.

There was a huge ovation in memory of the late Stuart Adamson and it was fitting that his Big Country colleague Bruce Watson was on stage alongside his son Jamie to complete the line-up.

Many fans present had been there for the band's breakthrough days in the late 1970s although some in the audience were not even born then.

The set was an impressive mix of the band's popular hits such as 'The Saints Are Coming', 'Working for the Yankee Dollar', 'Circus Games' and Masquerade' with less well-known material such as 'Woman in Winter' and 'Castles in Spain', which was released by The Armoury Show, Jobson's subsequent band after the Skids.

The singer turned film director said it was a "privilege" to appear at the theatre and the fans certainly appreciated them being there.

Alhambra manager Simon Fletcher said, "It was a great event and the culmination of a really good week.

"The first Fifer Festival has been a success and the Skids concert was a triumphant return.

"When they sang 'Into the Valley' it was the biggest crowd reaction we've had since the Alhambra re-opened. The band loved playing here and the fans had a great time."

Local bars and restaurants were busy as gig-goers flocked into Dunfermline, none more so than a packed Old Inn where Skids fans gathered in the hours before the concert, at an event organised by the band's website.

They were entertained by Skids music and rare footage of the band on video.

Dunfermline's emergence as a live music hub after many years in the doldrums was confirmed on Saturday with one of the city's busiest ever nights for live music.

According to Richard Jobson, his intentions for this concert were to sing out of tune and dance badly, as usual.

His dancing was indeed dreadful, at one stage resembling a chicken suffering severe cramp, but thankfully his band’s music remains stirringly powerful.

Jobson spoke between songs about his belief that the lyrics still meant something today, but it was a justified claim. The first pint of the evening went flying through the air on the acid-tongued Working For The Yankee Dollar before The Saints Are Coming was delivered in brilliantly desperate style. However, this was not a straightforward greatest hits set, and with a six-strong choir joining the group, there were moments of innovation too.

Aside from the lyrics, it was noticeable how well the actual music has endured. Never oi oi punks, Scared To Dance’s guitar was a hypnotic tribute to the late Stuart Adamson’s skills, A Woman In Winter’s chanting suited the choir’s backing and a muscular version of Hurry On Boys also impressed.

While the whole band were fine, father and son duo Bruce and Jamie Watson handled Adamson’s parts capably, Jobson was still the star, a proverbial whirling dervish whose vocal still snarls when required. His energy resonated throughout a closing trio of Circus Games, Masquerade and Into The Valley, which deserved the moshing it sparked from old and young punks alike.

It was a shame an underwhelming encore followed, in which both Saints and Valley were awkwardly repeated acoustically, a treatment that suited neither. It thankfully didn’t put too large a blemish on the evening, and if this truly is the end of the Skids, they finished on a high.

"I see the world in a darker way..I'm driven by anger" - Sccottish Sun newspaper article
By MATT BENDORIS : Published: 05 Mar 2010

FORMER punk Richard Jobson boasts that he can back-flip as well as Celtic star Robbie Keane.

The Skids frontman wants to perform the striker's trademark goal celebration when he returns to the stage with his band tonight.

He beams: "I did the half-time draw in the Scottish Cup game between Dunfermline and Celtic.

"It was Robbie Keane's first goal for Celtic and he can do a really good back-flip.

"I used to always do them on stage in the 70s, but Robbie's given me a taste for it again."

The major difference is that Jobson turns 50 next month while Keano is some 20 years younger.

Thrills ... Scott in movie New Town
Thrills ... Scott in movie New Town

"Aye," the Fifer concedes, "And the last flip I tried it at T In The Park in 2007, it was a total disaster.

"I landed on my knees and had to be helped off stage afterwards by some people from the ambulance service. But the fans seemed to appreciate the effort."

We meet in Glasgow's City Inn hotel.

Jobson is around 5ft 11in with cropped, greying hair and a long face to match his long teeth.

He talks with a slight lisp and stares intently with pale blue eyes when questioned.

But Richard is a strange mix - friendly then argumentative, down-to-earth then pretentious.

His personality reflects a career which has seen him go from angry young punk to male model, TV film critic and now movie maker, with his biggest hit, the ultra-violent New Town Killers, starring Scots Hollywood hunk Dougray Scott.

He's also just made a worthy short film with Oscar-winner Emma Thompson called The Journey - the story of a real-life sex slave from Moldova.

Yet at Glasgow's ABC venue tonight he'll be reliving his old anarchy days on tour and taking part in The Fifer Festival - a series of events staged in Jobson's honour.

Isn't it all a bit scatty?

Up front ... Skids star chats to Sun man Matt

He sniffs: "I don't think so. I just go with the flow.

"I said I would never reform The Skids, then the whole U2/Green Day thing happened."

That was when singers Bono and Billie Joe Armstrong performed a cover version of Richard's 1978 single The Saints Are Coming for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2006. It was then adopted by this year's surprise Superbowl winners The New Orleans Saints, as their anthem.

Jobson - who also had hits including Into The Valley and Masquerade - recalls: "I'm sitting in Abbey Road Studios in London watching Bono and Billie sing something I wrote when I was 17 in my bedroom in Dunfermline. Those words were written in anger. But I realised they were still relevant and I'm still driven by anger."

However, the baffling lyrics, which include the line 'A drowning sorrow floods the deepest grief... until the weather change condemns belief', were sent up by the Maxwell TV adverts.

He says: "The commercials tried to decipher the meaning. You've got to be able to laugh at yourself. You can't take yourself seriously."

Before taking himself too seriously, by admitting: "I was a little hurt when the ads took the mickey, though. My song was written about something serious."

But everything Richard does seems to be serious.

He shrugs: "I see the world in a darker way.

"Everything I do is driven by anger and compassion."

That could be partly down to the tragic events in his life.

Making their mark ... Skids were a hit
Making their mark ... Skids were a hit

Jobson's big brother Francis died in mysterious circumstances in India in 2001.

He said: "Francis was a Hare Krishna monk, so we would kick around Dunfermline in the 70s, me as a hardcore punk and him as a hardcore monk.

"He was 10 years older than me and took me to the cinema.

"That's where my love of film comes from.

"When he died in India we never really got to the bottom of what happened.

"Death in India is really no big deal. It was also during the Monsoon season when hundreds were dying every day. So another body wasn't a big thing."

Later the same year Skids co-founder Stuart Adamson - who went on to front Big Country - was also found dead after apparently taking his own life in a cheap Hawaiian hotel room after battling booze and depression.

Richard sighs: "Now that was a real surprise.

"I can't lie about it, we didn't leave on the friendliest terms when The Skids split.

"He moved onto greater success with Big Country and had to cope with suddenly being the frontman, which might have been behind some of his personal problems.

"I wasn't a very good singer. Stuart was better and a great musician. But I had attitude and front which he didn't have.

"I just had no idea things had got so bad as we were never huge drinkers as a band.

"I know I once wrote a film called 16 Years Of Alcohol but that wasn't about me.

"I'm epileptic so most of the time I avoid the stuff.

"We were never very druggie either while other bands were getting into cocaine and heroin.

"So it had no context for me that Stuart became an alcoholic."

Richard, who used to be married to husky-voiced TV presenter Mariella Frostrup, now lives in Bedfordshire with his second wife, Italian Francesca, and kids Archie and Edie.

His next two films will star Dougray Scott - a Sin City-style version of Shakespeare's Macbeth, and Into The Valley, about a young soldier returning to Fife from the frontline in Afghanistan.

Me: "How do you get on with Dougray - he always comes across as a bit of an a*** in real-life?"

Richard admits: "He's a bit dry for sure. But Fifers are naturally suspicious people. I think I've overcome that, but Dougray is still canny and wary of folk. He's like that with me, so don't take it personally. But he also has a vicious sense of humour.

"I'd like to work more with him even though he knows he'll never make much money with me."

But aren't Jobson's films guilty of portraying Scots as a violent race to the rest of the world?

He sniffs: "If you don't mind me saying so, you're wrong. Sure my films are violent but they're not set on some housing estate.

"New Town Killers had two hedge fund managers, wearing Armani suits, driving a Maserati and hunting a kid into the night - it's a wee bit different.

"I don't like sitting at film festivals in Brazil and Tokyo watching movies which show Scotland as a dung heap."

Richard has to go, maybe to practise his back-flips?

He says: "I'm heading for the big 5-0 but I've never really thought about age in my head. So I'll give the flips a go. Although, on second thoughts it may be best if I leave it to the last night of the tour."

Richard Jobson returns to music with Glasgow gig

An Evening Times Article Published on 4 Mar 2010
by Jonathon Geddes
click here for original source article.

Film director Richard Jobson is approaching 50, but he is preparing to return to his first love of music by gigging with his seminal punk band the Skids at the ABC in Glasgow tomorrow.
And he makes it clear he is still driven by the same passions as when he started with the band in 1977.

“In my head, I’m still 16!” he says. “I still have that energy and enthusiasm for doing things without wondering what the response will be. I think when you worry about the response, then you are doomed from the start.”
Richard has always done things his own way, from writing classic punk songs such as Into The Valley and The Saints Are Coming (covered by U2 and Green Day), to a stint as a television presenter on Sky, to directing films in different genres.
He has also recently shot the music video for former Verve singer Richard Ashcroft.

His next project is a film that takes its title from a Skids song, Into The Valley. It will look at the lives of soldiers in Afghanistan, and Richard admits it is the fact he believes the Skids songs still have an impact that has led him to reform the group again.
“It saddens me a bit that the Skids songs are still relevant,” he says.
“I wrote Into The Valley about kids having no prospects for work so the only road available to them was joining the Army. Then, 16 weeks later, they found themselves in Northern Ireland and came back very changed.
“Working For The Yankee Dollar, Charade, Masquerade were all about similar issues, and we are in the same situation again right now.
“A lot of the (Army) people I have spoken to do not think they are going to end up in Southern Afghanistan, but they are. “So it has gone full circle and I am still singing the songs for a reason.

After breaking up in 1982, the Skids reformed for a few shows in 2007, including T In The Park, and then played a brief set as part of the 2009 Homecoming jamboree.
Had the passion not still been there at Homecoming, Richard is adamant he would have called it a day.
“This still means something to me – I’m not just cranking them out and saying nothing more than ‘isn’t it great to be here’.

“We always felt something in common with the people who came to see us and that was what made it such fun.
“We will be doing a lot of the songs in ways people will not expect – different versions of Valley, of Saints, and we will be using a gospel choir from Glasgow.
“We will be playing an array of different stuff, songs we have not played before.

A lot of these bands from that era just come along and chuck out the songs people vaguely remember, and do the whole greatest hits thing. We hope we can do more than that.”

Certainly, the band’s set at the Homecoming gig was one of the night’s highlights. They were joined that evening by a wide range of Scottish acts, such as Deacon Blue and Hue & Cry.

Richard appears unsure of whether the experience was good or bad.
“Homecoming was odd,” he says. “I tried my best to watch as many of the other acts as I could, but the idea we were on the same stage as Hue & Cry ?was peculiar to me.
“Given the choice, that is something I would never have taken part in because we are so different.”

He is not exactly blown away by a lot of current musical acts.
“Pop is sludge now. I have always hated Radio 1 because, aside from John Peel, it was awful songs and all that rubbish like Dave Lee Travis DJing.
“Now it claims to be the coolest station in the world – says who?”

While he believes pop is as bad as ever, he does feel music as a whole has shifted, to the extent the public are more willing to listen to all sorts of tunes.
“Music used to be very divisive, whereas nowadays people have very eclectic tastes.
“The background we are from, there were certain lines that you had – if you saw somebody with a Yes album they were the enemy – that is not really the case now.
“That passion and anger is not there, people have much more open ears for music.
“In some ways that is a good thing, but one of the great things about music is that it was a divisive thing, and if somebody had a Wishbone Ash album you knew you hated them.”

Jobson finds his inner punk with Skids reunion

The Skids front-runner finds new found relevance to their music as the band reunite for Fifer Festival.

click here for original article and STV : Video Interview

Punk rocker turned film director Richard Jobson is preparing to reunite with The Skids as his home county comes together to celebrate his career in the creative industries.

The Fifer Festival, a five day event beginning on March 2, will feature Jobson’s work as a film director, poet, TV presenter and of course, the venture that made his name, The Skids.

The gig, which is already a sell-out, proved to the slightly hesitant Jobson that demand for the punk, lyrically driven music was still present today.

Speaking of this realisation, he said: “When I was invited to Abbey Road studios where U2 and Greenday did a cover version of The Saints are Coming, I was sitting in the company of the two biggest rock and roll bands in the world and they were doing a cover version of a song I wrote in my bedroom in Dunfermline when I was 17, I suddenly thought ‘these songs aren’t dead yet’.

“So I think that is another reason to visit them again, they feel pertinent again, feel like they have got a relevance right at this moment and time when there is so many quite serious things going on out there.”

Songs such as The Saints Are Coming, Working for the Yankee Dollar and Into The Valley were based on the experiences Jobson observed as a young teenager when those of a similar age to him began joining up to the army to face the front-line of war.

After establishing himself as a reputable director within the film world with productions such as 16 Years of Alcohol and New Town Killers, Jobson returns to the issue of young soldiers in his next film Into the Valley.

“I want to tell the story of what it is like to be a young Scottish guy just now who can’t get a job in difficult times and then something comes along, a choice - join the British Army.

“These kids want to have a bit of dignity, a sense that they are not just another statistics so they do join up and within 16 weeks they are in Helmand Province which is just a hell hole, it is a terrible situation they find themselves in.

He added: “It is not an easy story but is something I feel really passionate about.”

It seems passion is something this Fife icon has in abundance after having just accomplished a film recently aired at the Glasgow Film Festival with Emma Thompson about sex trafficking called The Journey…it seems there is just no stopping this multi-talented Scot!

“I have had an amazing life,” he said. “It has been an amazing journey and I feel as enthusiastic about life now when I am 50 this year than when I was 16 with the Skids and strapped on that guitar.”

Why Fife is celebrating illustrious son Richard Jobson : The List Article

As Fife prepares to celebrate one of its finest talents, Anna Millar finds Richard Jobson in fine fettle

Here in Scotland, we love a tale of the local boy doing good, and musician-turned-writer and film-maker Richard Jobson has done just that. A former member of punk band, The Skids, Jobson often sets his scene – whether it be his music, photography, film or music – against the backdrop of his native Scotland.

So with Fife celebrating its cultural identity this year with a series of events, Jobson seemed an obvious choice with which to kick off proceedings. Dunfermline’s illustrious son has curated a special programme of events, complete with special guests; and audiences can enjoy plenty of firsts, with Robson presenting new exhibitions of his photographs, as well as workshops and discussions.

‘It’s that funny thing, that Fife has always been sort of overlooked as a cultural hub, which is strange considering the extraordinary things that have come out if it,’ says Jobson.

Largely set at Dunfermline’s Alhambra Theatre, Jobson and Fife Council will start proceedings with Inspiration Day (Tue 2 Mar), an incentive designed to provide workshops to kids from deprived areas, who are interested in writing, film, production and editing. Later in the week, fellow Fifer Ian Rankin will put him through his paces with a Q&A before the premiere of his new short film The Journey, a project with Emma Thompson about the brutal realities of Sex Trafficking.

Never one for a quiet life, Jobson will also be planning the follow up to his Edinburgh-based New Town Killers while he’s there; Into the Valley, named after the Skids’ song, tells the story of a soldier’s return from Afghanistan to Fife and stars some of the cast from Killers. He’s also planning, he admits, on taking a couple of cameramen with him, and shooting what he refers to as a ‘meditation on Fife’ for a couple of days. ‘At heart I still feel sixteen,’ the 49-year old says with a smile. ‘I love what I do, and I’m delighted to celebrate in the place I came from. You can’t ask for more than that.’

The ode to Jobson comes to a close with a live performance from The Skids (6 Mar) at the Alhambra. See www.fifedirect.org.uk/2010 for more.

Legendary punk band The Skids are re-forming only to play their last gig – in Inverness.

Lead singer Richard Jobson revealed exclusively to the Press and Journal that he chose the Highland capital because of his long-standing love of the city.
It’s not the first time Mr Jobson, who has gone on to achieve fame in other fields, including as a film director, has put the city in the spotlight.

Last year the world premiere of his sex trafficking docu-drama, The Journey, with Emma Thomson, was held at Inverness Film Festival, and this spring he will shoot scenes for his latest movie, Helter Skelter, in the hills above Loch Ness.
In March, he is being honoured as part of The Fifer Festival, a week of events celebrating and showcasing his illustrious career, which culminates in a Skids reunion at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline.

Mr Jobson said: “The Dunfermline gig is pretty much sold out, so I’d been requested to do a couple of other shows.
“As I’ve become a big pal of Inverness, I said I’d do it, but only if we could play there.
“I’ve been coming here for years and love the city.
“The people are quite laid back and gentle and it has a vibrant arts and music scene.

“On our last visit my wife and I looked for locations for Helter Skelter, and were blown away by the scenery.
“We’ll be filming on the hills surrounding Loch Ness, with some scenes at the Falls of Foyers as it’s a spectacular location,” said Mr Jobson.
Helter Skelter tells the story of two men carrying out a deadly duel across Highland hills and calls for some dramatic landscapes.

Reforming The Skids was something he thought long and hard about before agreeing to. The Dunfermline-band, which were at the forefront of the punk movement, was founded in 1977 by the late Stuart Adamson.

After having a string of hits such as, Into the Valley and Working for the Yankee Dollar, the band split, but reformed last year to play a one-off gig for the Homecoming Event in Glasgow.

“It felt good to be singing again, and the songs still sounded relevant, so it wasn’t just another heritage concert,” said Mr Jobson.

The Skids will play the Ironworks, Academy Street, Inverness, on Sunday, March 7, with tickets going on sale on Monday, January 25.

“There are so many other things happening in my life this will definitely be the last time The Skids play, but it won’t be the last time I’m in Inverness,” said Mr Jobson.

Im getting fit... or gigs will hit Skids: Sun newspaper article 23rd Jan 2010

SKIDS frontman Richard Jobson is on a crash diet - to shape up for the band's farewell gigs.

The veteran punk star vowed to get fit for their big send-off after a ripped tendon left him in agony at T In The Park in 2007.

Jobson, 48, admitted wife Francesca warned him to be better prepared for the swansong shows at Glasgow's 02 ABC on March 5 and the Ironworks in Inverness two days later.

He said: "We're a really physical band. We put everything into it. I'm going to get myself ready so there are no pulled muscles this time.

"Eating habits, the gym, everything I can think of that might help. I had too nice a Christmas." The Fife rockers had a string of hits including Into the Valley and The Saints are Coming before they split in 1982.

And Jobson - now a filmmaker - says Inverness is the perfect venue for what really will be their final fling.

He said: "I love the city. The people are quite laid back and it has a vibrant music scene."

He added: "There are so many other things happening in my life, this will definitely be the last time we play."

Skids to play Alhambra gig - Dunfermline Press article

THE Skids are returning to Dunfermline for a home town concert at the Alhambra, it has been confirmed.

Tickets went on sale on Monday and look set to be in great demand given the response the last time the band played here in the summer of 2007, when they sold out two nights at the Glen Pavilion.

They return on Saturday 6th March as part of the inaugural Fifer Festival, which is recognising the work of the band's singer Richard Jobson, who has gone on to achieve fame in other fields, most recently film directing.

The Skids, with the late Stuart Adamson a driving force, stormed on to the music scene during the heyday of punk in the late '70s.

They had a string of hits such as 'Into the Valley', 'The Saints Are Coming', 'Masquerade' and 'Working for the Yankee Dollar'.

The band split in the early '80s but there has been a revival of interest in them recently.

In 2006, U2 and Green Day took The Skids music to a global audience when they released a cover of 'The Saints Are Coming' to raise funds for hurricane victims in New Orleans.

The next year, The Skids re-formed to mark their 30th anniversary with an appearance at T in the Park and the two Dunfermline dates.

Just a few weeks ago they were in action again when they played the Homecoming Year concert at the SECC.

To conclude a week of events celebrating the works past and present of Richard Jobson
as part of The Fifer Festival.
The Skids in conjunction with DF Concerts, The Alhambra Theatre and Fife Council will perform a one off show at Dunfermline's Alhambra Theatre.

Tickets will go on sale tomorrow Mon. 11th Jan. 9am at £25.00

VALLEY HO! Skids in comeback gig

News Of The World - A-Listed by Tim Barr Sunday 10th March 2010

New weave heroes The Skids are heading back Into The Valley ... with a spectacular hometown show.

The legendary outfit have been persuaded to reform for a special gig at Dunfermlines's Alhambra on Saturday, March 6.

And frontman Richard Jobson, who led the band through a spectacular performance at T In The Park in 2007, warned; "We're going to do this in style, it wont be a shadow of our former glory - it;ll be the real deal."

Tickets are expected to sell-out in record time when they go on sale at 9am tomorrow.

The bands last hometown gigs, at Dunfermline's Glen Pavilion prior to T, sparked frenzy among the fans. And in the hostoric surroundings of the Alhambra - rapidly winning itself a reputation as one of Scotland's best venues - the band could be on even BETTER form.

An insider at promoters DF Concerts added: "I'ts really eaciting news.
We're massive fans. Anyone who heard them play those classic songs like Animation, Masquerade and Working For The Yankee Dollar at the Glen Pavilion will know just how sensational they are as a live act."

The surprise reunion will be the grand finale of a week of events to celebrate Jobson's accomplishments outside music. Organisers of The Fifer Festival want to mark the singer's achievements as a writer and film maker alongsidehis musical successes.
Richard told A-Listed: "It's a great honour for me obviously. "The gig will be a wonderful way to finish the week.

"We're planning to play the classic Skids songs that people love best as well as a few forgotten gems.
"It's a brilliant way to start the year."

Christmas Message From Bruce and Jamie Watson

Well it’s that time of year again and I would like to thank you all for
your support again.

As you know both Jamie and I have played a dozen shows in our own right as well as performing with Skids at Homecoming show last month.

We have been busy recording new material for our album which we hope to release in March.

All sessions have been recorded locally at Monochrome and Backroom studios.

Both Magnus and Rab have been fantastic at accommodating us and are wonderful engineers.

We are nine songs into the album and the final song will be recorded in January, along with a few ‘slippery’ friends on board as well.

No shows planned until Feb/Mar as we want to get all recordings
mastered and finalised by end of Jan.

We have been speaking to Dunfermline venues and it looks like we could have an intimate album launch as well as a few other shows in the ancient capital.

Hoping to get a new agent involved as well, so there may be some shows
further afield.

All in all, it’s been a good year for us, a few gigs, a new batch of songs and some good times.

Many thanks to all who travel great distances to attend our shows.

We intend to get a bit busier next year.

To all Skids/Big Country supporters, you are the best.

See you in 2010

New Town Killers Scotsman Interview
Director Richard Jobson and actor Dougray Scott on their new dark thriller
Published Date: 06 June 2009
By James Rampton
THE SCOTSMAN
http://living.scotsman.com/interviews/Director-Richard-Jobson-and-actor.5340561.jp

Director Richard Jobson and actor Dougray Scott have returned to their homeland to make a dark thriller about two very different sides of Edinburgh society. And it's very much a tale for our times
NOT for nothing is Edinburgh the city that gave birth to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: it has always been a place riddled with contradictions. It is the locus of so many apparently incompatible aspects: Trainspotting and the New Town, Rebus and the Royal Mile, Burke and Hare and the International Festival.

That same sense of duality lies at the heart of New Town Killers, a striking new film about the rich and poor who live cheek by jowl in Edinburgh. Written and directed by Richard Jobson, the film focuses on Alistair Raskalnikov – did you spot the reference to Crime And Punishment there? Alistair, played with smouldering intensity by Dougray Scott (who starred last year in an American TV version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), is an amoral, "master of the universe" hedge-fund manager, who works for the ironically named Ethical Finances company.

He gets his kicks by luring desperately impoverished lads into an extreme game of hide and seek. Alistair ropes in an almost equally sadistic cohort, Jamie (Alastair Mackenzie), and then pays a hard-up teenager, Sean (James Anthony Pearson), to evade capture for one long night on the streets of Edinburgh. But the game soon turns deadly serious…

A Celtic film-noir cousin of American Psycho, the movie is a modern-day reworking of the David and Goliath story. Full of moody shots of stygian corners of the city, which exude an ominous Third Man quality, New Town Killers is also a dark and disturbing love letter to Edinburgh.

Jobson and Scott are sitting side by side in the sort of upscale central London hotel Alistair would frequent. They make for a charismatic double act. For a start, they are an undeniably handsome pair. Scott, 43, possesses the impossibly chiselled good looks of a current movie star – it is no surprise to learn he was nominated as GQ's "Most Alluring Man" of 2001. His allure has only been enhanced by his recent role as Desperate Housewives' friendly neighbourhood hunk. Jobson, meanwhile, possesses the impossibly chiselled good looks of a one-time pop star – readers of a certain vintage will fondly recall him drop-kicking his way through the Skids' Into the Valley on Top of the Pops in 1979. He has also done his fair share of modelling.

Both native Fifers, Jobson, 48, and Scott clearly enjoy a strong rapport – they finish each other's sentences and top each other's punchlines. They are already planning their next collaboration, a film adaptation of Macbeth using green screen and CGI "in the style of Sin City". The director, also responsible for 16 Years of Alcohol, the semi-autobiographical movie about a battle with the bottle, which picked up two gongs at the 2003 British Independent Film Awards, begins by explaining that New Town Killers taps into Edinburgh's long history of dualism.

"I wanted to play on the Gothic tradition of the contradictory city of Jekyll and Hyde," says Jobson. "I was working with an Edinburgh charity called Circle, which helps the children of alcoholics and heroin addicts in the outlying estates of the city. I found that, like everyone, they have their own dreams and ambitions. But the rest of society treats them as invisible – and that angered me greatly.

"I then started to become aware of another, very different form of invisibility, right in the middle of the New Town. Living in these beautiful, six-storey townhouses were these hedge-fund managers. They didn't court publicity – they lived in a bubble that the world never noticed – but they controlled everything. These two types were living side by side. I thought that was a strange paradox which might create a fascinating film."

Edinburgh is the ideal setting for this clash of two worlds, he says. "You can time-travel so easily – in a moment, you can move from the antiquated, genteel home of the Enlightenment, a place rich in culture, to this dark, unsettling, subterranean world."

Jobson penned the role of Alistair specifically for Scott – which may be construed as a double-edged compliment. "I get that brooding quality from Dougray," the director says, flashing a winning smile at his leading actor. "I like the fact that he doesn't overplay it – he just lets the camera do the work. So when we first met, I was shocked to discover how gentle and un-psychopathic Dougray is! But as soon as he read in rehearsals, he nailed the character. We were all chilled. He instantly captured Alistair's ambivalent nature, that compelling mixture of malevolence and charm."

"Am I flattered that he wrote it for me?" the actor asks with a knowing laugh. "Of course! I loved the script. I immediately understood what it was. It's a cracking thriller, but it also contains a very important examination of a substantial underclass which is too often ignored." He adds that his shared background with Jobson gave them an instant shorthand. "Richard and I are both Fifers and we have a lot of common references. We share a very particular vernacular."

The director chimes in: "Dougray and I didn't have to dig very deep to understand who Sean was. We're from villages six miles apart. We come from the same rural mining belt of central Fife that was destroyed by Thatcherism. So many people there are now forced to live on the margins of society."

Jobson wrote the script for New Town Killers two years ago, before last autumn's global financial meltdown. However, Alistair's job as a ruthless hedge-fund manager now seems absolutely appropriate. You won't find many people these days who disagree with the idea of a vicious financier as the thorough-going villain of the piece. "Obviously, the financial crisis has had a terrible impact on many people," acknowledges Scott, who is married to the actress Claire Forlani. "But for our film, it's an incredibly fortuitous coincidence that the markets have collapsed. It couldn't be more apt when the central character is a venal hedge-fund manager who revels in his success and is incredibly dismissive of those he views as beneath him. He has this tremendous sense of entitlement about his life. The way Alistair treats Sean is a great metaphor for the way many hedge-fund managers have recently treated the rest of society. Some of them seem to have no sense of responsibility."

Jobson, who in 2005 made A Woman in Winter, starring yet another son of the East Coast, the Dundonian Brian Cox, takes up the theme: "There is an innate arrogance about some hedge-fund managers. Maybe I'm jealous, but I find something abhorrent about them. I thought they'd be a good target in New Town Killers.

"As they drive about the city in their Maseratis and their Ferraris, they have this sheen of power. The film is to do with the self-obsession of the powerful. You give people power and they will behave like the Medicis, simply doing as they please. As Alistair rids society of what he regards as undesirables, he says, 'Who cares about these people? We're doing society a favour here'. He is totally amoral – he believes there is no cause and effect. But I am a moralist, and I believe there is cause and effect." Scott, a diehard Hibs fan who will soon be starring opposite Cox in BBC1's new adaptation of the classic John Wyndham sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids, closes by waxing lyrical about his native land. "It was great to be working in Scotland again," beams the actor.

"I feel very calm and can breathe very easily there. And Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities in the world. After all, my football team are there! The city's air, atmosphere, rhythm and heartbeat all make me feel good. Every day on New Town Killers I was rubbing my hands with delight about working in Edinburgh.

"It was minus six degrees when we were shooting," he actor adds with a wry smile, "so I was also rubbing my hands just to keep warm!"

Richard Jobson- The Five Thirty Show 17th February 2009

Edgy action film New Town Killers is one of the most anticipated features at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.
Writer and director Richard Jobson and actor James Anthony Pearson join the five thirty show to discuss the gritty Edinburgh film.

Written and directed by the former front man of The Skids, the film is set on the dark streets of Edinburgh and follows the life of a homeless teenager who is made an offer he can’t refuse by two hedge-fund managers. The wealthy bankers set him up to play a violent game of hide and seek.

Skids Fan Gathering 09 9th February 2009

A meet up with the usual suspects will take place within the next few weeks for discussions about the 2009 Fans Gathering.

A few 'exciting' ideas have already been put forward, however, a lot of groundwork is required.

The gathering will of course be held in Dunfermline in July.

Details will be posted as and when available. Watch this space!
Stuart Adamson Fan's Commemoration

Stuart Adamson Fans Commemoration

For some time now I have believed that there is a strong desire amongst friends & fans to permanently express the warm affection and respect we all have for Stuart Adamson.

I think many wish to honour his memory and articulate the high esteem in which Stuart's legacy is held amongst his personal friends & the fiercely loyal fans, from his home city of Dunfermline in Scotland to the most remote corners of the globe where his words & music touched souls, lifted hearts & entertained millions worldwide.

Having contacted Stuart’s family last year, agreement was reached that the time was right to go ahead with such a commemoration.

Paramount in any project in Stuart’s name is the principle that it must be something that we feel Stuart would have approved of and so we sought and have secured a strong association with Dunfermline Athletic Football Club at their home ground, East End Park Dunfermline.

The original idea of a small plaque has now evolved into a large mural to be painted on the back wall of the north stand facing the pitch and a portrait to be hung in ‘Legends’ bar at the ground.

The collection made amongst those who attended the Skids fan gathering at The Corner Music Bar in Dunfermline on Saturday 5th July 2008 will assist in the purchase of materials for these.

Now here’s where I need to ask for your assistance again.

We wish to append some words to the portrait to be positioned in ‘Legends’ bar and who better to suggest such words than you guys who know Stuart's work so well?

I would ask that you consider choosing some appropriate words from Stuart’s lyrics and perhaps some of your own to express how and why we feel the way we do about Stuart and send your thoughts to me via the 'Feedback' page of KinemaGigz.com where we will consider them all for inclusion.

Watch this space for further exciting news of other aspects of this commemoration project.

Submit your choice of words for Stuart's portrait at KinemaGigz.com (click the 'Feedback' button)

Thank you,
Ghoulz.

Richard Jobson's new movie NEW TOWN KILLERS will be shown at the BFI FILM FESTIVAL, at the ODEON WEST END on 28th and 30th October 2008

Richard Jobson takes us on a tension-packed joyride through Edinburgh streets.

Teenager Sean Kelly (James Anthony Pearson) lives with his sister Alice (Liz White) on a rough housing estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

With their parents gone and prospects limited, the pair struggle to get by.

Alice has accumulated serious debts, and now lenders are ruthlessly calling them in.

Desperate to get his sister out of trouble, Sean is presented with the chance by two mysterious strangers, Alistair (Dougray Scott) and Jamie (Alastair Mackenzie), who will give him the money he needs if he takes part in a hide and seek game over the course of one night.

Sean is not long into the hunt before he realizes that the men have sinister intentions, and that he will be lucky if he survives the night.

In creating a scenario where the well-heeled and privileged prey on the poor and deprived, director Richard Jobson is clearly wearing political concerns on his sleeve in his latest film, and is to be admired for it.

Yet New Town Killers is not bleeding-heart social commentary, but an ambitious and kinetic thriller, a tension-packed joyride through Edinburgh streets; it is obvious Jobson knows the city well, and that he loves it; he presents it wonderfully.

New Town Killers - Richard Jobson

IT'S early evening but a bleary eyed Richard Jobson is having breakfast. The film director is well and truly on night shift, making his latest movie, a dark, high-octane thriller called New Town Killers.

Starring Hollywood heart-throb Dougray Scott, it is set to be Richard's most commercial movie to date. Despite his fatigue, he cannot help but become animated when talking about it.

"It's pretty dark," he nods. "It's about two forms of social invisibility. On the one hand you have kids who have fallen off the social radar then the other end of the spectrum of social invisibility are these hedge fund managers who control our economy."

Essentially, the film is a game of cat and mouse – two young private bankers, Alistair (Scott) and Jamie, (played by Monarch of the Glen star Alastair Mackenzie) get their kicks by playing a game of hide and seek with desperate people from the margins of society.

They are hunting teenager Sean Kelly – energetically portrayed by James Anthony Pearson – who lives with his sister on an Edinburgh housing estate.

"The Alistair character is so nihilistic, his view of the world is just a game," says Richard. "He sets people up to hunt them down. Dougray is playing him with an incredible charm and luxuriousness that you kind of like him until you really see what he does."

Just this week, arts body Scottish Screen awarded Jobson almost £400,000 towards New Town Killers, boosting its budget to £1 million.

While the cash pot is small compared to that of mainstream blockbusters, it's a significant sum, especially when you consider that Richard is used to working with budgets closer to £400,000.

"Scottish Screen really helped me out on this one, which was great, and we've been picked up by Warner Brothers, so it's all looking really good," he adds.

Jobson displays uncharacteristic nerves when asked if his film will be a hit. He explains that much of the extra cash is being spent ramping up the action with a series of rooftop chase scenes.

'I want it to look like a proper big movie'

During the last week, the cast and crew have been enduring sub-zero temperatures on the top of former bank buildings on St Andrew Square.

Richard's most adventurous scene is inspired by parkour techniques – where athletes use their physical prowess to overcome obstacles – and sees Pearson negotiating Market Street rooftops. At one point, he falls on to a canopy before narrowly avoiding being hit by a car.

It's exciting stuff and difficult to execute – especially in icy weather conditions. It's a challenge to capture on film, but Richard is in his element.

"It is really exciting," says the 47-year-old. "I wanted it to look really stylish, like you're watching a proper big movie, even though it features kids from a housing estate.

"I think I am doing something that is potentially commercial which is where I think I'm headed anyway.

"I feel I've done all my arty stuff and now I can go on and use all the things I've learned to do technically and try and apply them to a bigger palette."

While Richard's ideas might be getting bigger and bolder, one thing that he has not tired of is Edinburgh – the city he returns to repeatedly to film and where his movies 16 Years of Alcohol and A Woman in Winter are set.

He particularly misses living here. The father-of-two gave up the Royal Mile flat he owned for 15 years when it became too small and he's currently looking for a new city home in the West End.

While he's living in the New Town during this filming session, the man who remains a subversive at heart says he doesn't feel entirely comfortable with the location.

"I couldn't stay in the New Town permanently – I'd feel like too much of a hypocrite," says Jobson, who made his name as the 16-year-old lead singer with the punk band The Skids.

"But I do like the Old Town/New Town split in Edinburgh," he adds. "The title New Town Killers won't mean anything to someone in New York or Tokyo but it means a lot to me.

"It's like there's an infrared beam going round the New Town – that's how I used to feel as a kid when I was hanging out. If people like me walked into that world, you almost set off an alarm bell, so I've used that idea in the film."

Richard, however, does admit to encouraging Dougray, a fellow Fifer, and his wife Claire Forlani to experience city centre life in the New Town.

"Dougray really wanted to come back to the east of Scotland to make a film, but that might have been so he could go and see Hibs, I don't know," quips Richard.

He adds: "Both Dougray and I are from central Fife so I think we share a common sense of humour and there's a lot of laughter on set.

"Alastair Mackenzie is also a very funny guy, so we've been having a blast.

"It's undoubtedly the best experience I've had as a writer-director – the sheer fun I'm having making it – although the scenes we're dealing with are dark."

Jobson's inspiration for his film noir comes from his involvement with the charity Circle which supports vulnerable children and families in some of Edinburgh's most impoverished areas.

He agreed to become a charity patron three years ago after the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown, saw Jobson's film 16 Years of Alcohol and asked him to get involved.

He is now expecting Sarah and Gordon Brown to attend his premiere of New Town Killers when it is released early next year.

He adds: "I'm a very privileged person to get the opportunity to not only make films, but to do that in my favourite city – the most beautiful city in the world."

A message from Richard,  Bill and Mike - Friday 11th April

From Richard
Hi all you skids fans out there.......

I am currently immersed in filming my new movie in Edinburgh, so will not be able to join you all in Dunfermline tonight to celebrate what would have been the 50th Birthday of the late great Stuart Adamson. But I will take a private moment to reflect and remember his genius and his wonderful spirit, like you, I loved the way he played, so today, let's get his music playing everywhere. Have a great one everybody. Richard Jobson

From Bill
Stuart, you were a giant among men and a true guiding light. I cherish the friendship we had and the times we spent together in High School, Tattoo and The Skids. ll never forget you and wish we had never drifted apart. RIP my friend. Bill Simpson

From Mike
Thinking back all these years to when I first met Stuart it seems unbelievable that I was playing music with him. I realize now how fortunate I am to have known him, not only as a friend but as a musician. His loyalty to his family, friends and fellow musicians has always been an inspiration to me. I believe that Stuart was the most inspired and influential Scottish songwriter of our generation, his genius reached us all. I am privileged to count myself as one of the many who loved him.

Remembering Stuart Adamson Friday 11th April
Friday 11th April would have been Stuarts 50th Birthday
Our thoughts are with his friends and family on this day.
Thanks for the music and the memories.
Please leave messages on the Big Country message board and the Skids fan website forums.

RICHARD JOBSON taunted English guests at Burns party
Punk legend RICHARD JOBSON taunted English guests at the Burns party, branding them thick and poorly endowed. The Dunfermline born former SKIDS front man was master of ceremonies at the event. Film maker Jobson, 47, chuckled " What's the second most favourite song in the universe? Auld Lang Syne. " What's the most famous song in the world? Happy Birthday, well done! " It was the Scottish people around who got that. That's because we're smart and your thick. We've got big chins and you've got no chins. " We've got enormous *bleep*s and you've got........."
The ex rocker wowed guests by teaming up with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers to do a special rendition of the Skids hit 1979 single Into The Valley.

KIND HEARTED punk legend Richard Jobson donated royalties worth £500,000 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The former Skids frontman signed over the cash after the band's hit, The Saints Are Coming, was covered by U2 and Green Day to raise funds for victims of the 2005 New Orleans disaster. Now readers have nominated the selfless star for our Bighearted Entertainer award. Last night modest Richard, originally from Ballingry, Fife, said : " I just wanted to do the right thing by those people and help in any way i could". The three gigs in July 2007 were a fantastic experience for myself and the rest of the band, memories I will personally treasure forever.

The atmosphere and excitement generated at both gigs in The Glen Pavilion was electric, the sense of anticipation being tangible even before we took to the stage for the first show.

The amazing reaction we received from the dedicated fans who had travelled from far and wide, as well as the mildly curious who were perhaps there to see what all the fuss was about, was inspirational in making both nights a memorable and joyous experience for us all. I wish we could have played even longer, I was having so much fun.

Before, during and after the gigs, the warmth and affection shown to us was humbling, with the enjoyment of the occasion truly being a two way thing. The fans knowledge and love of the band is unbelievable, I thank you all and feel privileged to know some of you as good friends now.

T in the Park was certainly a day I will never forget, the sun shone and we all had a ball performing to the biggest crowd we had ever seen, possibly the biggest crowd at T for that early afternoon time slot. Thanks to Geoff Ellis of DF Concerts and Michael Jobson of MJM Ltd for giving us the opportunity.

I would like to reiterate Richard's message and personally thank all of the wonderful people for their hard work, tireless effort and enthusiasm in contributing to the success of the project, I salute you all.

Last but by no means least I would like to thank the late great Stuart Adamson, without whom there would be no Skids.

Tuesday 17th July - Message from Richard Jobson
After two incredible evenings in Dunfermline where emotions ran high and happy, T-in the-Park was a wonderful way to finally put closure on The Skids story. As we walked to the stage the rain stopped and the largest audience I have ever seen in front of me gave us an almighty generous welcome. For me the site is in the back garden of where I spent the majority of my childhood, adding another level of emotional charge. Our set was short and to the point: a celebration of the music: a tribute to the past: a goodbye to our fantastic loyal fans and most importantly a final farewell to the mighty Stuart Adamson. On the stage looking out on such an enormous gathering was a thrill and something I will remember forever and I think in many ways the music still sounded relevant. My bones were creaking but what the hell I skipped, jumped and spun in my own unique out of time kind of way and felt 16 again.

This would have been impossible without the help of a bunch of great and honourable people and I thank them for their humility and passion:

Geoff Ellis, Michael Jobson, Dave McGeachan, Bruce Watson, Bill Simpson, Mike Baillie, Jamie Watson. Jane Button, Brian Jobson, Camilla Gwilt, Andrew Thompson, Willie Tocher, John Ramsay, Kleiner Morgan, Dave Brown, Michael Wheeler, Simon McGlynn, Sean Condie, Miles Baillie, Cob, Callum Kay, Justin Smith, Billy Sloan.

A special thanks to Tim Barr for his unwavering, tireless dedication to the project.

My Best wishes to you all.
